Recently emerged viral infectious diseases are new threats of 21 st century. Failure to develop a vaccine for HIV infection, low efficiency of influenza vaccines, the discovery of metapneumovirus, the outbreaks of SARS and reemergence of bird flu (H5N1) are examples of the necessity of intensive research in this filed. SARS is a new respiratory viral disease associated to a novel Coronavirus. The role of immune system in the pathophysiology and evolution of this disease is investigated by other researchers. Cytokines are key factors in maintaining the balance of the immune system and are valuable as prognosis or therapeutic agents. Here we have monitored the status of the immune system of the SARS patients during the time course, using the peripheral blood for understanding disease evolution. We observed a significant increase of IFN-gamma in mild SARS group, which possibly is associated with improved disease outcome.
